WESTLOCK - The Westlock RCMP Detachment has implemented additional COVID-19 precautions by locking the front door to all walk-in traffic and are limiting in-person interactions.

Westlock RCMP Staff Sgt. Al Baird said they’ve decided to take the additional step of locking down due to reduced staff onsite and to limit the spread of the virus — they will see people if needed, but they’ll be vetted over the phone first to see if they actually need to see someone in person.

“We have staff on site, but we’re triaging because we also have people working from home. What’ll end up happening is that people will come to the door and find that it’s locked. There’s a sign asking people to call in and the ladies will take the call and figure out what the person needs. And if we can help them over the phone, e-mail or fax that’s how we’ll handle it,” said Baird Dec. 16.

“And if they need to come in then so be it. We’re still available, but with reduced staff this is our way of meeting the needs of the public.”

A Dec. 14 release from the Alberta RCMP notes that all detachments have modified service delivery at front counters and started controlling access to public spaces within RCMP facilities Dec. 13.  The measures include limited occupancy at each location’s reception area — in the case of Westlock that number is two. If occupancy hits capacity, an individual may be asked to wait in their vehicle, or outside until there is sufficient room. Masks are also required in RCMP facilities.

The release also notes that the public is encouraged to make appointments for any service ahead of time when possible and are reminded that many crimes can be reported online (https://ocre-sielc.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/alberta/en).

Meanwhile, criminal record checks and vulnerable sector fingerprint service will be limited to essential needs only and will have to be scheduled by appointment. As an option, Albertans can access a criminal record check online (www.edmontonpolice.ca/pics). If there is a requirement for follow up fingerprinting, that will have to be arranged through the local detachment.
