Athabasca RCMP responded to 179 calls for service between April 29 and May 13, including an accident where two pedestrians were hit in a residential area on May 12.

ATHABASCA – An 80-year-old woman will face no charges after two pedestrians were hit at an intersection in the High School Hill area last week.

On May 12, Athabasca RCMP responded to what turned out to be a low-speed collision with no injuries to the pedestrians or damages to the vehicle.

“She didn’t see the people crossing because she was looking to see if any cars were coming from the opposing lane. She slammed on her brakes, but still ended up hitting them,” said Const. Jay Tessier.

“The vehicle didn't have any damage and the two pedestrians were more shaken than they were injured.”

The pedestrians didn’t want charges laid, but the driver did receive warning tickets and the incident is being reviewed by Alberta Transportation’s Driver Programs to determine if the woman has any conditions that may affect her ability to drive safely.

That was one of 179 calls for service Athabasca RCMP responded to between April 29 and May 13.

Aside from the usual work of serving court documents and assisting the general public, RCMP responded to three assault calls in those two weeks. Members also responded to the sudden death of a 35-year-old man who could not be resuscitated. The cause of death was still being determined as of press time.

Notably, no break-and-enters were reported in the detachment area, which is relatively rare.

“There are usually a few break-and-enters, especially at this time of year when people are starting to get out to their cabins,” he added.

Members also responded to a hit and run by an unknown vehicle at a local grocery store; two calls of uttering threats; three dog complaints; four calls of disturbing the peace; two more calls regarding abandoned vehicles; and six 911 hang-ups.

Several incidents of mischief and suspicious people and vehicles were also reported.
