One dead after pickup truck and semi collide near Smith

SMITH - An accident near Smith/Hondo Jan. 18 left a man dead after his pickup truck collided with a semi-tractor trailer.

According to a Jan. 20 RCMP press release, Slave Lake RCMP, the Smith Fire Department and EMS responded to the scene of the crash near the intersection of Highways 2 and 2A at 7:08 p.m. Saturday. The Hamlet of Smith is roughly 90 kilometres north west of Athabasca and 123 kilometres north west of Westlock.

RCMP say the 59-year-old man, who was travelling alone, was declared dead on scene. The driver of the semi, a 64-year-old man, only suffered minor injuries.

Traffic on the highway was diverted until the collision was cleared shortly after 3 a.m., Jan. 19. The cause of the accident is under investigation by the RCMP — an

RCMP collision analyst has attended the crash site.
