Temperatures could reach 40C in the next four days, Environment Canada warns.

ATHABASCA/BARRHEAD/WESTLOCK — Northern areas int the province of Alberta are under a heat warning that could see temperatures climb close to 40C early next week.

On Friday afternoon, temperatures can near 30C but they will climb to the mid-30s by Sunday, and much higher next Monday and Tuesday. The heat wave stretches from the Westlock-Barrhead-Athabasca region all the way north, west to Jasper and east to St. Paul-Cold Lake-Lac la Biche.

“A prolonged, dangerous and potentially historic heat wave will begin today in Alberta and will last through next week,” Environment Canada warned.

“Little to no reprieve from the heat is expected, as overnight lows will remain between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. The duration and magnitude of this heat event will lead to increased risk of heat related illness.”

Meteorologists advise residents and visitors to reschedule outdoor activities for cooler hours, take breaks from the heat in cooled indoor spaces, drink water and non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages, and avoid leaving children or pets inside a closed vehicle.

“Pay particular attention to individuals that can experience earlier or more severe effects from heat including infants, children, seniors, and individuals with pre-existing lung, heart, kidney, nervous system, mental health or diabetic conditions, outdoor workers as well as those who are socially isolated,” Environment Canada wrote.

Symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion include body temperature, lack of sweat, fainting, and unconsciousness.
