RCMP search nets 250K in stolen property

Police found vehicles, firearms and ammunition, and identification cards on the property

Boyle - An RCMP search of a property south of Boyle last month, led to the recovery of $250,000 in stolen property.

Boyle RCMP visited the property Oct. 21 to arrest a man and a woman on outstanding warrants, and while members were there, they noticed a number of vehicles on the property that were previously reported stolen.

"While at the residence officers noticed several licence plates and vehicles on the property were previously reported stolen. A search warrant was sought and then executed a short time later," RCMP said in a media release received Nov. 3.

During the execution of the search warrant, officers from Boyle RCMP and the Eastern Alberta District Rural Crime Reduction Unit (EADRCRU) came across two firearms; multiple stolen licence plates; electric bike parts; an SUV; trucks and trailers; a motorcycle; and personal identification, including drivers licences and credit cards. All told, RCMP recovered more than $250,000 in stolen property.

Travis Overton, 37, of Fort McMurray and Nicole Murphy, 36, of Athabasca, were jointly charged with possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), two charges of failing to comply with a release order, two charges of possession of ammunition contrary to an order, and 12 charges of possession of property obtained by crime.

RCMP had initially come to the property to arrest the pair as Overton was the subject of several warrants covering 17 charges from Strathcona and Wood Buffalo RCMP. He was remanded into custody following a judicial review and is scheduled to appear Nov. 9 in Athabasca Provincial Court.

Murphy also had eight offences of her own from Athabasca and Wood Buffalo RCMP detachments and was released with numerous court dates at numerous locations.
