Athabasca softball teams end season in Clyde

Athabasca's Peewee and Mites level softball teams had their own year-end tournament in Clyde June 23.

Athabasca's Peewee and Mites level softball teams had their own year-end tournament in Clyde June 23.

On the peewee level, both of their teams took home a medal, with the Athabasca Trappers Team One winning the bronze medal over Westlock team One by a score of 11-10.

"The girls played well in all three of their games," said Athabasca Team One coach Kevin Senyk. "They played really well in their first game against Athabasca Team Two, which we won fairly easily, though I do not remember the score off hand. The second game against Westlock Team Two did not go that well, as the hot weather really got to them. They ended up losing this match-up by a 16-6 score."

Senyk said the girls for the most part had a very good year.

"There were a couple of games here and there where they did not play to their potential," he said. "But overall, they played quite good, and I was very proud of them.

Athabasca Team Two head coach Leanne Jewell said despite not getting the gold medal, her team still had lots of fun.

"We did lose the final game to Westlock Team Two by a 12-11 score, but at least it was close," Jewell said. "I can not remember the score from our first game with the other Athabasca Team, but I know we lost. And we won 17-16 against Westlock Team One to get into the final."

Jewell said overall, the girls played awesome.

"They all had a good time, and they still took home the silver medal," she said. "All of our games were good games, and the girls learned a lot."

Madison Wiselka, one of their players from Athabasca Team One, said both teams did really well.

"I really enjoyed playing ball this year," she said. "It was a good year, and I hope to be back playing next year."

Wiselka said there is a possibility she could play for the bantam level next year.

"Most of the team will be over the age limit to play peewee next year," she explained. "So, if there is enough of us, we might move up and get a bantam-level team next year."

Athabasca Minor Ball Association president Ryan Maier said that girls softball has really seen growth over the last few years.

"They have really good teams," he said. "And they have lots of good players too."

Maier also coached the Athabasca Mites Team Two team, and they won the bronze medal 12-10 against the Athabasca Mites Team One. Barrhead's two teams grabbed gold and silver.

"The girls had fun, and they improved on their skills all year long," Maier said. "Both teams learned a lot, and we hope to see them come back and play ball next year."

He said the state of girls softball in the Athabasca region has a strong future ahead of them in the coming years.
