BCHS girls relay team bring home bronze medal

The Barrhead Composite High School (BCHS) junior track team finished their season on a high note. On June 5, about 30, BCHS junior high school athletes travelled to St. Albert to compete in the North Central Track and Field Zone Championships.

The Barrhead Composite High School (BCHS) junior track team finished their season on a high note.

On June 5, about 30, BCHS junior high school athletes travelled to St. Albert to compete in the North Central Track and Field Zone Championships.

Program assistant Collette Weeks who coaches the team with teachers Heath Kline, Sierra Schmidt and community volunteer Hanna Schmidt said the team outfitted themselves well producing many strong performances.

Among the stronger BCHS performances were the senior girls relay team, composed of Jenna Scheffler, Kianna Rauscher, Jasmine Eisner and Michelle Kettler, took home the bronze medal.  Kettler also narrowly missed the podium finishing fourth in the 400-metre race.

Other strong finishes included Julian Sutherland, sixth in the junior boys long jump, Emma Weeks and Hailey Brand, who placed fifth in the 400 and 800-metre dash.

“Competition was fierce with schools from places like St. Albert, Sherwood Park Leduc in attendance. It was great for the kids to see some of Alberta’s top athletes in action, many of which train all year,” Weeks said, adding the Top Six finishers in each event earned points for their school division.

To qualify for zones, BCHS athletes had to finish in the Top Two at a divisional event hosted in Barrhead May 24.

Other BCHS attendees included in Grade 7: Ariel Brade, (100 and 200 metres, and long Jump), Alysa Deschamps (high jump), Jayda Orr (shot put), Grace Fisher (400 metres), Ethan Olson (100 metres,), Luke Kristianson (200 metres, triple and high jump), Dean Bernier (400 metres), Cruz DeVries (800 metres), Ethan Dezaeyer (high jump), Jett Parks (shot put). Seth Pederson (discus) and Kaldonnan Hill (Javelin).

Grade 8: Nate Callihoo (triple and long jump, 200 metres), Nicholas Reid (1,500 metres), Emma Weeks (100, 200 and 400 metres) and Hailey Brand (200 and 800 metres).

Grade 9: Henrik Quintilio (3,000 metres), Connor Kincaid (shot put and relay), Keaton Branden (triple jump and relay), Michelle Kettler- (200 and 400 metres and relay), Ava Rozko (shot put), Kianna Rausher (javelin, relay), Shaelynn Rochon (javelin), Jasime Eisener (200 metres and relay), Owen Stoik (100 metres and relay), Kassidy Blum (relay) and Jenna Scheffler (relay).
