Barrhead Composite High School (BCHS) is sending on a four-member team and one individual golfer on to the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association (ASAA) championship on Sept. 23-24.

All five golfers qualified for the provincials during the 3A Zone championship at the Barrhead Golf Club on Sept. 16.

A total of 30 athletes — 28 boys and two girls — took part in the tournament, which coincided with a rare day of sunny if cool weather.

“Our Barrhead athletes represented our school admirably,” said golf coach Barb Sabiston, in an e-mail.

First off, the team consisting of Arend De Waal, Tristan Hiemstra, Gavin Moes and Abe Properzi won the zone banner by shooting 230.

Morinville won silver by shooting a 257 while Edwin Parr Composite School from Athabasca came in third with a 266.

Sabiston noted the scores are tallied by adding together the top three scores from each team.

Individually, DeWaal and Hiemstra tied for gold by shooting a 78. Trysten Hallock also qualified for provincials as an individual by shooting an 80, which netted him a bronze medal.

The ASAA provincials is being held at the Alberta Springs Golf Resort near Red Deer and the Innisfail Golf Club. See next week’s Barrhead Leader for an update from the championship.
