The Barrhead Composite High School (BCHS) golf team is hoping to win a second consecutive 3A Zone Championship this Monday, Sept. 16 at the Barrhead Golf and Recreation Area.

In an e-mail, BCHS golf coach Barb Sabiston said the zone championship begins with a shotgun start at 10:30 a.m.

In addition to Barrhead, the zone encompasses Whitecourt, Westlock, Drayton Valley, Athabasca, Morinville, Edson, Parkland and Slave Lake, so there will be a good range of competitors on hand.

The top boys’ and girls’ teams consisting of four players, as well as some individual golfers, will advance to the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association (ASAA) provincials in Red Deer on Sept. 23-24.

Sabiston said she currently has seven male athletes from BCHS competing to represent the school at zones.

“They will be golfing against each other this week to see who will be the team for BCHS,” she said, adding that everyone else will compete as an individual and have their own chance to qualify for provincials.

BCHS has traditionally been successful in golf; as noted earlier, BCHS won the zone championship and also the Alberta 3A/4A boys golf provincial championship in 2015.

“I think we have a strong chance to zone champions again,” Sabiston said. “We have a strong group of golfers in our community because of our great course.”
