The Junior High Division Three cheerleading team from Edwin Parr Composite saved their best for last with a big win at the Aloha Spirit Championships in Hawaii earlier this month.

The team left chilly Athabasca on April 4 on their way to the beautiful Hawaiian islands and returned on April 12. In between, they competed against some of the best young cheer teams in the world, experienced the sights of Hawaii and even took in a day of classes at a local high school.

The highlight, of course, was winning their division.

“It was an amazing experience,” said team captain Megan Senyk.

Co-captain Shelby Campbell agreed.

“It’s probably the best trip I’ve ever been on,” she said.

Before the competition began, the team partnered with the cheer team from a local high school and attended classes.

Once it was over, they made sure to be tourists and visit famous places like Pearl Harbour.

“It was the best experience I’ve had on the team,” said Alex Lapshinoff of the trip.

Coach Barb Lachance was amazed at the skills on display at the event.

“The (performances) we saw were phenomenal,” she said. “It’s going to encourage the kids to achieve more next year.”
