As the Mosquito league came to an end over the weekend, the Barrhead Yankees walked away with one win and two losses.
Barrhead began the tournament in a game against Goodfish Lake Friday, July 20 at 6:30 p.m. Not off to a good start, the team lost 14-4.
The Yankees' second game of the tournament Saturday went better than the previous night. As the players hit, ran, scored, pitched, and stole bases with great success, Barrhead came out on top with a win of 14-1.
Going into the semi finals against Stettler Sunday afternoon, spirits were high. However Barrhead was faced with great challenges, which they were unable to rise to. The game ended with Barrhead adding another loss of 10-0 to their tournament.
Throughout the weekend head coach Dwayne Sonnenberg and assistant coach Rod Callihoo said they think the players performed well. After losing their first game, the team put on a great show for their second. Although the team conquered game two with flying colours, the final game was one of many errors.
“It was tough to lose that way, against a team we thought we could compete with,” said Sonnenberg.
“I thought we had a chance to win this one. We wished we could have been playing in the final,” added Callihoo. “We came out there and were maybe a little nervous with some pressure on us, but they did a good job.”
The team may not have made it through the semi finals, but both coaches agreed the players have come a long way since the start of the season.
“They learned lots, and did very well on defense,” said Sonnenberg. "We are a very strong team defensively. Batting has kind of been hot and cold most of the season, but I think overall they did very well.”
