EPC team treks to San Diego

Edwin Parr Composite’s senior girls basketball team got a late Christmas present in the form of a trip to San Diego, California.

Edwin Parr Composite’s senior girls basketball team got a late Christmas present in the form of a trip to San Diego, California.

The team made the trek south of the border for a tournament at Mount Miguel High School where they won one game and lost three against some highly skilled competition.

“We probably should have come out 2-2, but we just couldn’t pull out one of our games,” explained head coach Wade Hicks. “We got a chance to play some really good teams.”

In addition to competing against teams from the San Diego area (as well as one from Ontario) the girls also ran into a more familiar opponent; Morinville, another Alberta team that had also made the trip south for the tournament.

The coach wasn’t too concerned with the wins and losses at the tournament, as none of the results would count against the team’s Alberta rankings.

“Down there the focus was more on just getting the kids in and playing, and just working on stuff we know we need to work on,” said Hicks. “Everyone got to play. It’s good to be able to get in all those extra minutes.”

It was a basketball-heavy trip for the girls, as they played four games while taking in a number of others. Continuing their immersion into the sport, the girls took in a highly competitive boys high school game before checking out a game between San Diego State and Redmond College. The highlight of the trip from a basketball perspective might have been their attendance at an NBA game, where they watched the Los Angeles Clippers battle the Portland Trail Blazers.

They also made sure to do some sight seeing in their beautiful surroundings, with stops at places like the world famous San Diego Zoo, Sea World and Disneyland.

After leaving Athabasca late on Boxing Day, they returned on Jan. 3.
