It is all about skill development.

That is what Barrhead senior rookie coach Kim Luciuk said in between swatting mosquitoes following a game against Busby May 22.

“At this age, we concentrate on developing skills, teaching good sportsmanship and having a good time,” she said, noting which is one of the reasons why they don’t keep score.

Rookie baseball is the youngest age group, nine and under, in the Barrhead Minor Baseball Association (BMBA) with the exception of T-ball players (five to seven years old).

Due to the skill levels of players in this age group, Luciuk noted there are some age overlaps.

For example in BMBA non-competitive Pembina House League, there is both junior (ages seven and eight) and senior (ages eight and nine).

She added their season is relatively short, noting they have been practicing for two weeks and that their game against Busby was their third game and second at home.
