Barrhead’s senior curlers wrapped up their season last week with a two-day bonspiel March 27-28 at the Barrhead Curling Rink.

Drawing 16 teams from Barrhead and the surrounding area, the Senior Mixed Wind-up bonspiel was two days of curling, with each team getting in four, six-end games, said Barrhead Senior Curling president John Busch.

“It was excellent,” he said. “It was a great competition. We’re all seniors, but we all still want to win.”

With 16 teams in attendance, the bonspiel had four finals scheduled for the final draw Wednesday afternoon.

In the ‘A’ final, the Barrhead-based team of Allan Shipton, Jeannette Shipton, Jack Hornsby and Ewald Kelm emerged as 6-4 winners over Glen Thompson’s Fort Assiniboine rink.

In the ‘B’ final, Bob Sirack’s rink, including teammates Cam Ray, Bob Schmaus and Jim Ashby defeated Leo Schmaus’s rink.

The ‘C’ final pitted Bob Rasmusson against Ralph Badry. Once the last rock was thrown, Rasmusson and teammates Laurie Assenheimer, Dave MacIntosh and Clarence Assenheimer were the winners.

Finally, the ‘D’ final had Busch and his rink of Shirley Busch, Harold Gilberson and Gordon Lappin defeating Terry Kalmbach’s rink.

Having 16 teams at the bonspiel speaks to the strength of the senior curling circuit in Barrhead, Busch said.

“The senior league is the strongest league in Barrhead,” he said. “We regularly get 16 teams out at events like these.”

Twelve of the teams at the bonspiel were put together at the start of the season to make sure they were as even as possible, Busch added. The remaining four teams were added to bring the field up to 16.

Also at the mixed bonspiel were Barrhead’s stick curling champions, Busch and Ray Wildfong, who were presented with their winner’s plaque.
