Westlock Grey Lion Kevin Ginger delivers a pitch during their 8-3 win over the Spruce Grove Eagles July 15 at Keller Field. The Grey Lions remain on top of the AWCBA standings with a 9-2 record.
The Westlock Grey Lions added one more win and one more rain out to their record last week to maintain their lead atop the Alberta West Central Baseball Association standings.
The Spruce Grove Eagles were supposed to host the Grey Lions July 14 to make up for a game that was cancelled earlier in the season, but it was again cancelled due to rain and rescheduled for the next night in Westlock. The Eagles made that trip to Keller Field July 15 and just avoided another downpour before they were sent home to ponder an 8-3 loss.
The Grey Lions weren’t so lucky July 18 when they visited the Sherwood Park Pirates though and were only able to get in a single inning before the skies opened up and the game was cancelled.
The team now boasts a 9-2 record, maintaining their lead in the league, giving them a 1.5 game edge over the Edmonton Heat and a 2.0 game edge over both the Sherwood Park Ducks and Sturgeon Paladins.
The game against Spruce Grove saw a well-balanced and consistent effort from the whole lineup which was instrumental in the home win, said manager Sheldon McConaghy.
“It was a full team win. We had three different pitchers in the game and we got hits all up and down the lineup to contribute and it was a good win.”
Kevin Ginger started the game and earned the win while Aaron Cotter closed it out.
“It was a steady progression for the whole game. We scored runs each time we were up and put pressure on them at all times,” said McConaghy. “We got guys on base and had a few walks and a few hits and were able to get their starting pitcher out of the game early and just kept adding on.”
The Grey Lions will try to make up a game against the Sherwood Park Ducks July 23 and another against the St. Albert Cardinals July 25, both on home turf, before a regularly scheduled game at Keller Field July 26 against the Sturgeon Paladins.
“Coming down the stretch we want to finish strong. We have three good teams coming up and we need to put our best effort forward,” said McConaghy.
