Hockey to wrap season at awards night

The Westlock Minor Hockey Association will wrap up its 2011-2012 season with the annual award ceremony scheduled to take place on April 12.

The Westlock Minor Hockey Association will wrap up its 2011-2012 season with the annual award ceremony scheduled to take place on April 12.

Even though the location for the event has not been decided upon yet, players and coaches will spend an evening reflecting on a year of hard work both on and off the ice.

“The coaches will talk at the ceremony about their team and their seasons. We have some major awards that we give out every year to the pee wee, bantam, atom and midget players,” said association president Dean Fagnan.

Both the midget Sabres and atom Selects will be honoured this year said Fagnan — the midgets for their 1660 Tier 3 league title and silver at the ‘D’ provincials, while the Selects will be lauded from their 1660 league bronze medal and their silver-medal finish at the ‘B’ provincials.

“We have those teams as well as other teams that won consolation finals as well,” he said.

Fagnan said there will be no goodbyes in the program that night for the players who held their final season in the Jubilee Arena.

But the players, coaches and executive members were all gathered, however for one final group shot at the arena on March 21 as all the teams and coaches were suited up on the ice one last time.

Fagnan said that the association is prepared to move into the Westlock Rotary Spirit Centre for the next season and will need to have further discussions with the town about moving over the banners.

“Hopefully when they are done in June we can talk to the town about putting in our banners and our displays and trophy cabinets and that sort of thing,” he said.

Fagnan said that the association executive members will spend their upcoming meetings discussing changing the Westlock jerseys for the coming season.

“We are looking at getting new jerseys for all the teams. We got some that definitely need replacing and we thought that this would be a good time.”

The new jerseys may also mean a new Westlock logo said Fagnan.

“We sent out surveys to parents to see if they would want one name for our entire association and what that name would be and then we can build a logo around that.”

With the season at a close Fagnan said that the association will still participate in a couple of summer related activities.

“We usually do something like a street hockey tournament at Wacky Saturday in June. And sometimes we throw something in at the parade.” he said.

Registrations for next year is set to take place in June for the 2012-2013 season and Fagnan said that should keep them busy.

“The summer is spent with meetings discussing what our teams are going to look like next year and trying to figure out what tier they are going to be in,” he said.
