Little Mites still having fun at the ball diamond

The season continued June 7 for both of the Athabasca Trappers' Mites softball teams, as they played each other at the Mosquito Ball Diamond at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex.

The season continued June 7 for both of the Athabasca Trappers' Mites softball teams, as they played each other at the Mosquito Ball Diamond at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex.

Team One came out on top in this game, as they outscored Team Two after three innings by a score of 14-7.

Team One head coach Jeff Schweer said despite the win, the main thing is that they had fun out in the field.

"That's also our plan for our next game," Schweer said. "We just go out there, have fun, learn a little bit, keep it all interesting and all that fun stuff."

He added with every game they play, the team continues to improve on their skills.

"Every practice and game is all a learning experience for the 7-9 year old's," Schweer continued. "They just get better every time with the experience, so that's really good."

The first inning was really close, with Team One just barely outscoring Team Two 6-5. But the second inning saw the former score four more runs, while the latter did not score even one, putting the score at 10-5 for Team One.

The third inning saw Team One close the deal, as they scored four more runs, while Team Two only managed two runs.

Also during the game, Team One assistant coach Erin Dosenberg did some pitching for both teams during some of the game's plays.

"She's a better pitcher than I am, so we get her in to help with the pitching some of the time," Schweer said. "During this game, we did a no-walk rule. So, after four balls has been declared, the coach-pitch goes in, and depending on how many remaining strikes each player has, is how many pitches Erin throws."

Despite the loss, Team Two head coach Ryan Maier said the children still went out there and had a blast.

"It was another fun game," Maier said. "They are still learning, and they are learning to hit a little better. They also know what to do when they get the ball now, so it is starting to come together."

He added that there is nothing he would do differently during their next game.

"It remains a progression as we go," Maier said. "They continue to get better with every game and we are happy with how things are going."

The Mites play each other once again June 12 at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex.
