Call it a case of “turkey fever.”
The Barrhead Midget 2 Renegades kicked off the new year by going 1-1 in two home games at the Barrhead Agrena on Friday and Saturday.
Their first game on Friday was a 10-4 blowout against Leduc, as a rusty Barrhead squad was clearly shaking off the rust from the Christmas holidays.
“We got beat bad,” said assistant coach Laine Baker. “It was our first game back since (Dec. 16). We had two weeks off and we never even practiced.”
By Saturday, however, the Renegades were back in fine form, defeating the visiting Sturgeon Midget 2 squad 6-3.
Barrhead leapt out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and increased their lead to 5-1 in the second. Up by four goals, the Renegades took things easy in the third period, scoring one goal to Sturgeon’s two.
Kayden Harder scored a whopping four goals and contributed one assist during the match, while Carter Bergseth had a goal and an assist. Dalton Waggoner also netted Barrhead’s first goal.
Colton Lovich, Justin Baker, Connor O’Malley and Hayden Sabiston each had two assists, while Tyson Hornberger and Devon Lind had one assist apiece.
Baker said this was a much better team, as the Barrhead Renegades “executed like a team.”
Even with Friday’s loss, the Midget 2 team is in good shape, having only lost one other game this season. They also tied the CNN Midget 2 squad on Dec. 15.
Coming up for the Barrhead team, they will play Camrose on their own ice this Friday, Dec. 11. They then host the CNN Midget 2 squad on Saturday, Dec. 12.
