Athabasca’s Midget ‘A’ Hawks continued their winning ways with a 12-3 triumph over Slave Lake last Friday.

The Hawks played host to Slave Lake at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex, and quickly set about giving the visitors plenty to think about on their long drive home. The home team scored early and often, while most of the 35 Slave Lake shots that got through to Athabasca’s net were turned aside by goaltender Robbie Mason.

Plenty of local players got on the score sheet in the game, with Marc Terrien, Coulton Sheets and Cole Hamilton all scoring hat tricks. Team captain Zach Fisher (who returned to the ice after being out with a shoulder injury), Tanner Richards and Ryan Runcer all added single markers, with Richards potting his first goal of the year.

The win improved the Hawks record to 9-1-2 on the season. Their 20 points are good for first place in their division in the Sturgeon Pembina Hockey League, and they’re seven points up on second-place Edson.

Head coach Duane Terrien was pleased with his team’s dominant showing.

“The boys came out firing on all cylinders. We were flying,” he said. “Coulton Sheets was going to the net hard, and it was really good to have the captain (Fisher) back. And our goaltending was solid as usual.”

Hamilton, who had two assists to go with his three goals, was impressed with how quickly his team got back in the groove after taking a break over the holidays.

“We were pretty antsy to get out there,” he said. “We used our speed to our advantage.”

The team has four regular season games remaining, and then it’s on to the playoffs.

“We want to win them all and get the division championship for Midget A,” said Ty Tipton.
