The result was never in doubt.

The Barrhead Steelers scored five first period goals on way to a 10-1 shellacking of the Wetaskiwin Icemen in their first game of the new year on Jan. 11.

Jeremy DeVries opened the scoring, just 24 seconds into the game. Colton Bondarchuk and Justin Haltiner were awarded assists.

Less than two minutes later captain Owen Weeks, assisted by DeVries, extended Barrhead’s lead.

Fifteen seconds later Wetaskawin looked like it might make a game of it scoring their only goal of the game.

However, the goal did little to spark the opposition as the Steelers continued to dominate play. By the end of the period, Barrhead would score three more goals from Brendan Bujold, assisted by Bondarchuk and DeVries, Bondarchuk, unassisted and Luke Szybunka, assisted by Brayden Bain and Blake Starman.

In addition to their offensive output, the Steelers played strong defensively holding the Icemen to five shots while taking 22 of their own.

Midway through the second period, Bujold would score his second goal of a game, with an assist being awarded to Haltiner. Once again Barrhead outshot their opponents by a wide margin of 11 to 5.

Just 22 seconds into the third period, Bujold scored his second goal of the game with an assist to Sheldon Dewsnap.

At just over the seven minute mark Dewsnap extended the lead scoring an unassisted goal.

About five minutes later the Barrhead received a fortunate break from the officials missed what should have been checking from behind infraction on the Steelers.

One of the Icemen coaching staff then questioned the referee vigorously and after a stick-throwing incident on their bench and a two-man power play for the Steelers as a result of misconduct and bench minor penalties. Landon Petiot scored an unassisted goal with about 38 seconds to go in the penalties. Dylan Stoik finished out the scoring with a goal assisted by Starman with two minutes left in the game.

Brandon Meir stopped 16 out of 17 shots for the win.

The Steelers next home game is Jan. 18.
