The Williams family from Fort Assiniboine once again dominated the Parent Link annual cub car race, winning both the children and adult races.
The event, which entered its third year, took place at Barrhead Agrena’s Charles Godberson Rotary Room with over 30 competitors participating.
In the children’s division, Blakely Williams edged out her sister to take first place. Their dad, Devin, won the adult’s division and their grandfather, Bob McCurdy placed third.
It is the second year in a row that the Williams family finished on top of the podium, with Devin taking the adults race, while Tess and Blakely finished first and second in the children’s division.
Parent Link programmer Deb Kushniruk said the popular event features hand-built, non-powered cars out of wood, which race down an elevated track sloped to the ground.
“The track was sitting in storage at [Barrhead and District Family Community Support Services] when we found it and we thought we would put it to use. That was three years ago and the event has just taken off,” she said.
About a month prior to the race competitors picked up their kits during a building/movie night.
“It is really about having fun and the kids being able to spend time building the car with their parents or grandparents,” Kushniruk said, however, she admits people can get very competitive. “That is why everyone has to use the same materials and a five-ounce weight limit is put on the cars to make sure no one has an unfair advantage. It really is about design and building skill.”
Devin Williams being one of them. After his wedged shaped entry narrowly nipping out former County of Barrhead councillor Bill Lee’s school bus for first place, he said he might build his own track for he can practice so he is prepared to defend his title next year.
