R.F. Staples and St. Mary track and field athletes managed three Top 10 finishes at the Alberta School Athletic Association Track and Field Provincial Championships June 1-2.
At Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School in Red Deer, R.F. Staples Kieran Michalczuk placed sixth in junior boys high jump clearing a height of 1.8 metres.
Teammate Cache Schiller also netted a sixth-place finish in the junior boys five-kilogram shot put with a throw of 12.02 metres.
R.F.’s Swedish-exchange student Moa Johansson finished 11th in senior girls 800 metre run with a time of 3:04.50, while Max Benham was 14th in the junior boys 700 gram javelin throw with a distance of 36.56 metres. Destinee Miller finished 16th in the intermediate girls three-kilogram shot put with a distance of 7.58 metres.
Representing St. Mary School was Grade 12 student Ashley Tymkow, who finished 10th in senior girls 1,500 metre in a time of 5:42.82.
Jaiden Romanuik wound up 12th in junior boys 1,500 metre run with a time of 4:43.39.
Tymkow had qualified to compete in the 3,000 metre event as well, but because it conflicted with the school’s graduation ceremony she opted to miss it and attend her grad.
“Ashley had her grad last night definitely affected her performance,” noted St. Mary track and field coach Darcy Romanuik. “Jaiden was leading after the first lap and ran a personal best.”
