Parents with their kids in tow arrived in droves, as excitement for the upcoming season reached a fevered pitch.

The Barrhead Raptors peewee football team held its registration night on April 6 at the Barrhead Agrena.

“This brings back memories from when I played footbal – the sweat, the mud. It’s great the kids are showing an interest in playing football. It’s really encouraging,” said head coach Travis Cook.

Cook and team manager Marty Yarrow were on hand to discuss with curious parents the details of the upcoming season and the team.

Those kids present for registration were treated to a special visit from an Eskimo.

Canadian defensive back Corbin Sharun of, the Edmonton Eskimos was on hand signing T-shirts, and posing for pictures with the kids.

“It’s great to be out here with the kids. I grew up in Leduc, so it’s good to see these kids coming through,” said Sharun.

With the football season only weeks away, the excitement at the Agrena was palpable. Cook and Yarrow spoke with parents about their plans for the season, and what they hope to accomplish.

“It’s still early, but the turn out today has been great. The smiles I already see on the kids’ faces are awesome. I just want to put on my equipment and play,” said Cook.

Football in Barrhead won’t just be about tackling and hurting people; it’s about helping the kids learn life lessons that can benefit them in the future Yarrow said.

“Playing minor football was a huge boost to my development into becoming a man. It helped me with making friends; it instilled life values in me that I still hold on to today. It taught me how to go about life, and never give up,” said Sharun.

The season is scheduled to run for 10 weeks. Spring camp will begin in late May, and practices will start in June.
