Jeff Johnson’s second annual Road To Hope Golf Classic was a big success last weekend. The beautiful weather wasn’t the only reason to play a round of golf last Friday.

The Athabasca Golf Club played host to Jeff Johnson’s second annual Road To Hope Golf Classic.

The event raised money for Road To Hope, the local organization that helps provide transportation to cancer patients.

Playing 18 holes of golf was just one way for all of the attendees to show support for the organization.

“It’s not just one person, it’s the whole community,” said Madena Reimer, former RTH president and current transportation coordinator.

“We get great community support. What more can you ask?”

Johnson himself (the member of the legislative assembly of Alberta for Athabasca-Redwater) busied himself by cooking up hot dogs on the seventh hole. In between talking to (and serving) hungry golfers, he spoke of how important Road To Hope is to the community.

“There are a lot of great charities, but this one is pretty unique and special. It’s as grassroots as it gets,” he said. “It’s real heartening to see people pick this up and do so much with it.”

Johnson was joined at the event by other provincial politicians like Justice Minister Verlyn Olson, Wellness Minister Gene Zwozdesky and the MLA for Lesser Slave Lake, Pearl Calahasen. She came to support Road To Hope and thank the community for its support of displaced Slave Lake residents earlier this year.

“They showed us what a community really is,” she said.

This year’s fundraising total had not been tallied by press time.
