Softballs will be flying around Westlock this summer as the slo-pitch season is almost here.

The Westlock Slo-Pitch League will open registration for the coming campaign at its first meeting scheduled to take place at the recreation centre on May 1.

League organizer, Sheldon McConaghy said he expects there will be approxiately 14 teams this year as general interest in slo-pitch has remained steady.

“Currently we don’t have a limit set for how many teams we will have,” McConaghy said.

Players can expect to fork out approximately $350 to sign up for the league which will include diamond rentals and prize money for the year-end tournament.

“It also depends on how much the town is going to charge us to rent the diamonds too,” he said.

McConaghy said he is also currently looking at bringing in some familiar sponsors that could also help bring down registration costs.

“Boston Pizza usually sponsors us and I have been in contact with them already. They usually help us cover costs and stuff,” he said.

Game nights will be held twice a week which will be determined by the availability of the diamonds McConaghy said.

“Everyone just plays each other on different nights. At the end of the season all the teams end up playing in the playoff,” he said.

The champs get a cash prize, which will vary depending on the number of registrations.

“We take approximately $50 from each team and we just kind of pool it in at the end,” he said.

The location of the games this year will depend on whatever diamonds they can use, said McConaghy.

“Usually we use the ones behind the skate park and then we use some in Clyde too if we can get them,” he said.

The season begins in mid May and runs until mid August.

“The best way to sign up is to come to the first meeting and get all the information,” he said.
