The ninth annual Bryan Mudryk Golf Classic is just over a month away. This year’s event is set for June 18 at Skeleton Lake Golf Club in Boyle. As you’d expect, preparations have been underway for quite some time, spearheaded by events coordinator Terry Mudryk.

Work and fundraising continues, but a number of special guests have already been confirmed for the event. Mudryk himself will be joined by a number of his fellow TSN personalities, including Darren Dutchyshen, Kate Beirness and curling analyst Cathy Gauthier.

In addition, a few world-class curlers will trade their brooms for golf clubs. These will include former world champion Cathy Overton-Clapham as well as Olympic gold medalists John Morris and Ben Hebert.

A few guests are yet to be confirmed.

In advance of the Classic, two fundraising events will be held on June 4. These are the Battle of the Paddle on Skeleton Lake and the United Cycle to Boyle.

This year’s fundraising drive is already looking promising as the organizers shoot for their annual goal of $100,000. As has always been the case, the money raised will go to the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, where Mudryk himself was treated when he fought the disease.

“The push is on for the next couple of weeks to get pledges in. It’s very important,” said Terry Mudryk.

Spots in the Classic itself have been sold out for a while, and golfers are coming from across Canada to take part. However, there are still tickets available for the dinner at the Boyle Community Centre. They are $50 each, and are going fast.

“I assume we’ll sell out early, with the lineup that’s coming in,” said Mudryk.

Bryan himself, who naturally plays a big role in bringing in the special guests, is thrilled with the group that will join him in Boyle next month.

“You don’t really get a chance to meet a lot of these people in small towns. It’s fun to bring them home. They’re just like you or I, they like to have fun,” said the event’s namesake.

“I’m excited to have Dutch (Dutchyshen) coming, he’s a small town guy, he’s a ton of fun and he’s one of the more recognizable faces from TSN.”

There’s a bit of details work to be taken care of before the event arrives, but there is one special prize that Terry Mudryk was eager to share word of. “One thing we have this year that’s a little bit different is a high rollers raffle,” she said.

A small number (between five and eight) of golf balls will be numbered and sold for $1,000 each. Buy a golf ball and you get a Mudryk Classic golf bag, created specially by Nike and filled with goodies. Buying a ball also earns you a place in a raffle for a deluxe package of golfing, dining and more.

If you can’t spare the money but still want to be part of the event, don’t worry. Volunteers are needed for both the dinner and the Classic, and Terry Mudryk asks all who are interested in helping out to contact her at 780-689-6736.
