The Spirit Foundation is well on its way to achieving its $1.6 million fundraising commitment to the Westlock Rotary Spirit Centre.

The Montreal Canadiens Alumni Game, hosted by the foundation on March 15 at the Jubilee Arena, was a huge push towards reaching that goal by raising roughly $20,000.

Foundation fundraising committee co-chair Glenn Baron said that the Spirit Centre has an estimated cost of $15 million and the committee knew they would need to raise a part of those funds via community support.

“The $1.6 million was just a goal or target that we had set aside at the beginning. At this point the funds that we are raising are just for the capital building project,” he said.

The community has responded well to their efforts with the final goal already within reach.

“The fundraising goal has always been $1.6 million, and we’re hovering around the $1.1 million committed at this point. We’re hoping that we’ll reach our goal very soon,” Baron said.

The half a million dollars needed to meet the finish line will require the committee to come up with some new fundraising ideas.

“It’s going to require a few more events, but at this point things are going very well and there have been a lot of people in the community stepping up,” he said.

The next event the committee has their eyes are include a grand opening event.

“We’re talking about the grand opening, and we’re just getting some ideas for exactly when we’re going to run. We haven’t gotten that confirmed yet but that’s the project we’re working on right now.”
