St. Mary School golfers returned home from zones last week with a gold medal for Reid Casavant and silver for the boys team.

Four boys, Blake Olson, Kaden Chamzuk, Reid Casavant and Jaiden Romanuik, and one girl, Janelle Romanuik, made their way to Slave Lake Sept. 16 to represent the school in the zone competition.

“I’m proud of the kids and how they did on the course, their sportsmanship,” said coach Darcy Romanuik, for whom this was the first zone tourney in 20 years that he didn’t organize.

Casavant shot a 76 and won the event, while his team came in second. Janelle placed fourth on the girls side.

There was initially some confusion on the scorecard at the Roland Michener Secondary School-hosted competition as the boys team left Slave Lake without receiving their medals or banner as they were under the impression they placed fourth.

“It was a good day result-wise, but a bad one in terms of how the tournament was administered.”

Romanuik made sure everyone got a chance to receive their medals in a more ceremonious manner, presenting the boys with their awards at the school’s awards night Sept. 18.

The zone tournament was the school’s only golf competition of the year as the season is short, except for Casavant, who was in Red Deer this previous weekend competing in provincials. His track record this summer speaks for itself, since he came back with trophies from three different junior golf competitions across the province.

“The golf season is pretty short, and kids are encouraged to go in tournaments over the summer, that’s kind of the way that goes,” said Romanuik.
