Someone made off with a piece of the school.

Only when the snow had melted away, did phys-ed. teacher Gayle Lamothe notice that a piece of the long jump track was missing.

“I think at some point in the evening, sometime in the late fall, someone decided to cut a piece off of the long jump track to take home for their own personal use, or for vandalism. We’re not sure,” said Lamothe.

With the track-and-field season quickly approaching, it will be difficult for Barrhead Composite High School to host meets that require the use of the long jump pit.

“We’ve ended up with a long jump facility that’s invalid,” said Lamothe.

BCHS hosts two track meets throughout the year. Replacing the missing portion of the long jump track will cost the school hundreds of dollars.

“Something like that will cost the school lots of money. It’s not so much about the money, but it’s the hassle it causes the school to replace it, and have it down in time so that we can use it. We host two track meets back there, and we need it up and working in time,” said Lamothe.

When Lamothe discovered someone had removed a piece of the track, she was hugely disappointed, she said.

“The school raises money through the track meets we host to purchase this kind of equipment. To have it taken away from us is quite disappointing,” said Lamothe.

The missing piece of track is black in colour, rubber based and about five to eight feet in length and about three feet wide. The missing piece is at a point in the track that long jumpers use to propel themselves through the air.

If anyone has any information regarding the missing piece of track, contact the RCMP Barrhead detachment at 780-674-4848.
