Stephen (Steve) Allan Cerny

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Stephen (Steve) Allan Cerny on May 7, 2024. Steve passed away peacefully with his wife Linda by his side.

Family left behind to mourn his loss are his wife of nearly 59 years, Linda; his daughter Stephanie Cerny (Trevor) and her children; Lane (Anna) Borle, Brayden (Brooke) Borle, Shae Borle and Kinsley Cerny; and his son Brent Cerny (Jodell). Steve will also be deeply missed by his siblings Jane Oberg, Maggie Krasnow, Joe (Peggy) Cerny, Catherine Johnson, Roy (Fran) Cerny and Linda’s siblings; Mildred (Dave) Woods, Shirley (Joe) Maskewich, Harvey (Rite) Cunningham, Marlene Cunningham, Brian (Pat) Cunningham as well as numerous nieces and nephews including great and great-great nieces and nephews and family friends.

Steve was the 7th of 8 children born to Joseph and Mary Cerny and being the name sake of his grandfather Stephen Klukas. Steve grew up on the Cerny homestead in Bilby area and met and married the love of his life on June 5, 1965. He worked on the farm and also worked pipelining and then became Superintendent with PCL. Many of his nieces and nephews had the opportunity to work for him and grow an even closer bond of family. Steve was a family man first and gave up his job with PCL to farm full time in the Barrhead area so he was able to watch his children grow up. During the few moments of down time from farming he would enjoy hunting and fishing with his family. Steve’s love for family was his greatest treasure and the joy he felt within his heart to have his grandchildren enjoy spending time on the farm with himself and Linda was something he looked forward to always. The strength of his will power was shown just over 9 years ago when he was diagnosed with cancer. Given only 12-18 months he was determined to prove the doctors wrong and put up the fight to make as many family milestones as possible.

Steve was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Mary Cerny, Linda’s parents Lark & Winnifred Cunningham, sisters Julie Cerny and Caroline Mills, nephews and nieces Marshall Mills, Grant Cerny, Vernon Oberg, Wayne Cunningham, Kevin Cunningham, Patricia Cunningham, Rita Krasnow, Jesse Robinson; brother & sister-in-law’s Bill Oberg, John Krasnow, Raymond Mills, Doug & Marg Cunningham, Gerald & Isabel Cunningham, Ervin Cunningham, Audrey Cunningham, Dennis Cunningham, Glen & Eva Westlund, Don I’dler and Bruce Cunningham.

The family would like to especially thank Dr. Bernes, Dr. deWaal, Dr. Tawfik, Dr. Liew and dad’s “Girls” at the Barrhead Cancer Centre for the kind and loving care over the past 9 years to ensure Steve had everything he could, to fight as long as he did.

Service will be held on May 17, 2024 at 1pm at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Barrhead. Private interment will happen at a later date.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in honor of Steve Cerny to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, Barrhead Healthcare Centre Auxiliary memo line “Barrhead Cancer Centre” or charity of choice.
