Barbara Doreen Chernish

1924-2021

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear Mom, Grandma, and Great-Grandma Doreen Chernish on May 31st at
96 years old. She was born at home in the Grosmont District on July 22, 1924 to her parents George and Martha Cooke. Doreen and her sister Marion attended a one-room school house in the Lahaieville District. She met the love of her life Bill Chernish when he worked as a farm-hand for her family. For 10 years they got to know each other while Doreen was busy cooking, sewing, knitting, and helping with the daily farm duties. They were finally married in 1948, with their first child Linda arriving in 1949. Linda was followed by Delilah in 1951, Calvin in 1956 and Dwight in 1959. They raised their family on the farm they built together near Island Lake. Bill and Doreen loved to travel, whether it was with their motorhome and their camping friends, or on a bus tour. They also enjoyed trips to the Casino, and dances at Grosmont Hall. Doreen had a passion for flowers, gardening, knitting and leather-work, and could always be found making homemade soup and her famous cinnamon buns. She brought joy to all who knew her and she has left a lasting impression that will forever be remembered and cherished.

Doreen leaves to mourn her loving husband of 74 years Bill, children Linda (Gerry) of Bonnyville, Delilah (Gord) of Edmonton, Calvin (Theresa) and Dwight (Tracy) of Athabasca, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to Pleasant Valley Lodge in Athabasca.
