Donald Hengel, Beloved Educator, Family Man, and Community Pillar, Passes at 91

Donald Hengel, known to many as Don, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2025 at the age of 91, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and quiet strength.

He is survived by his wife Lois; children: Dean, Janet, Dawn Allison, Robin and Tim; grandchildren, great grandchildren, and friends and family who adore him.

From a young age, Don’s heart was tied to the outdoors and the art of craftsmanship. He spent much of his life teaching woodworking — but it wasn’t just about building things. Don taught his students to create with intention and care, shaping more than wood; he shaped character. His calm, steady presence in the classroom inspired generations to build not just projects, but confidence and pride in their work.

Don’s love of sport was a defining part of his life. In his younger years, he played baseball with passion and skill on several local teams — including the Falun Fastball team, the Mulhurst Elks, and the Westlock Chevys. Beyond the diamond, he was part of the Ski Patrol at Tawatinaw, always ready to lend a helping hand on the slopes. And his adventurous spirit found expression as a big game hunter, embracing the challenges and beauty of the wild with respect and reverence.

A longtime Rotarian, his commitment to community was unwavering, and he could always be found at local events, offering a warm smile, a steady hand, and heartfelt encouragement to those around him.

Don’s hands built more than just woodwork — they built a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. As a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, he was always present, a steady source of strength and kindness. His spirit lives on in the many lives he touched with his generosity and care.

Travel was another passion Don shared with his wife Lois. Together, they explored new cultures and distant lands, collecting stories and memories that enriched their lives and the lives of those lucky enough to hear them. Including a trip to play in the World Masters of Golf in New Brunswick.

Don Hengel’s life was a beautiful tapestry of purpose, connection, and quiet wisdom. He will be remembered for his gentle kindness, his steadfast spirit, and the way he made every person feel truly seen and valued.

He leaves behind a grateful family, countless friends, and a legacy of love and integrity that will inspire for generations to come.

As per Don’s wishes the family will not be holding a formal service.
