Ivey, Basil

Basil Charles Ivey passed away February 8, 2024 at the age of 101 years. He was born October 24, 1922 in Athabasca, AB to Garfield and Edith (Minnie) Ivey. His early years were spent in Colinton and Ellscott on the family farm. His first job paid $10/month at Pat Flynn’s store. Later he rode the rails to Fort McMurray and Waterways, working as a swamper. Other positions included Horne and Pitfield in Calgary. In 1945, he married Edwina O’Malley DeFrain and they farmed in Ellscott, Thorhild, and finally Westlock. Mom passed away in 1990 and in 1996 he married Minnie Taylor. They were together in Westlock and the Smithfield Lodge until Minnie passed in 2023.

After moving to Thorhild he got a job as a salesman at Thorhild Motors. He worked there a few years and then after moving to Westlock he started work as a salesman at Doherty’s Garage working for Harvey and then later Frank Doherty, both of whom he respected immensely. It was in this career that Dad was very proud, as he enjoyed not only the people he worked with along the way, but the many customers he got to know over the years. He ended his sales career in real estate working alongside Roger Cobban for Century 21.

Dad demonstrated hard work, responsibility, deep faith, and love of family. He said “My family were the highlight of my life”. He leaves his five children: Shirley Piedt (Vern), Gordon, Douglas (Lorraine), Debbie Schmidt (Edgar), and Lorne (Janet). Grandchildren are Shannon Piedt, Christopher Piedt, Catherine Piedt, Jim Ivey, Jason Ivey, Cameron Ivey, Jeffrey Schmidt, Kirsten Hahn, Allison Schmidt, Paul Ivey, Michael Ivey, Scott Ivey. Also survived by 16 great grandchildren.

Predeceased by his parents, his brother Gordon, his first wife Edwina, his daughter-in-law Claudette, and his second wife Minnie. A heartfelt thanks to the Smithfield staff, especially the Home Care Team, whose care allowed him to remain where he was most comfortable until his death.

A private family service will be held in accordance with Dad’s wishes.

If desired, donations in his memory can be made to the Smithfield Lodge or a charity of your choice.
