JOHNSTON, William Neil

William Neil Johnston passed away peacefully at the Athabasca Health Centre on February 4, 2021, at the age of 85 years. Neil was born November 5, 1935 in Vernon, BC, to William and Alice (Penman) Johnston.

His father was called up from the militia to serve as a member of the Canadian forces and the family returned to Alberta before William Sr. was sent overseas. Neil’s early years were spent near a ranch where his grandfather raised heavy horses. Neil’s love of horses came naturally from both of his grandfathers. When Neil’s father returned from the war the family moved to a small farm east of Calgary. Neil became a working man at a young age.

His work in the Esso refinery in Calgary took him as far as Norman Wells and eventually to Fort McMurray, where he became superintendent of the refinery. Neil was a reader and life-long learner, taking courses from Athabasca University by distance learning.

Upon retirement the acreage at Colinton became their home. Outbuildings were constructed, corrals fenced and a training ring prepared. The horses soon arrived. Neil and Shirley believed in the importance of community. They became involved and made lasting friendships. They enjoyed camping with family and friends. One of Neil’s passions was the wilderness where he could hike, hunt and fish.

Predeceased by sister Rita Johnston, Neil is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Shirley (Ruefller), his sons, David (Lynda), and Vernon (Teresa), grandchildren Kayla and Ian Johnston, step-grandchildren Christine, Dennis and Eric Landry, sister Bonnie Larden and many nieces and nephews.
