A source of pride

We have heard the pronouncements often enough. There is a dire shortage of skilled labour in Alberta. Employers are finding it difficult to replace retiring baby boomers. Foreign workers are being hired to fill the gap.

We have heard the pronouncements often enough. There is a dire shortage of skilled labour in Alberta. Employers are finding it difficult to replace retiring baby boomers. Foreign workers are being hired to fill the gap.

While Barrhead is affected as much as anywhere by the skill shortage – indeed there were reports recently of companies hiring workers from Poland, South Africa, Mexico and the Philippines – there is one local company that is prospering in this tough economy. Northplex, the modular homes builder east of Barrhead, is fast-becoming an economic jewel in the community.

With a skilled workforce now numbering about 130 people, it has an impressive $5 million payroll, potentially a mini-windfall for the area.

To ensure most of this money goes into the local economy, president Frank Deys wants to increase relationships with businesses; we imagine the Chamber of Commerce is fully behind this effort.

Last Friday and Saturday, Northplex held an open house to show off its wares, especially its finished modular basement, believed to be unique in Alberta. Most encouraging perhaps was the sight of groups of Barrhead Composite High School students kitted out in goggles and yellow helmets for a tour of the plant.

It is to the young, of course, that employers will be turning in years to come for skilled labour.

It is imperative, therefore, that youngsters be energized about potential careers in crafts like carpentry, plumbing and welding. They need to be shown that a trade can offer a fulfilling and financially rewarding life.

Overcoming the skills shortage will require a close partnership among industry leaders, government, labour and educators.

In the meantime, we can take comfort that amid the economic gloom in Alberta, with constant talk of cuts to services, Northplex is standing like a beacon of hope.
