LETTERS: Flag must return to its proper use, says veteran

The Town of Westlock lowered flags at all municipal facilities last summer to honour the lives of Alberta wildfire firefighter Morgan Kitchen and Rocky View County employee Colin Hough.

Dear Editor:

Now I have had it. The Canadian flag is nothing more than a red and white chunk of cloth.

When I was a kid the flag went to half mast every evening and was raised again in the morning. The kids in school all lined up and were quiet as the flag went up.

So what's my beef? I go past the police station every morning and I check the flag. Yep, it's at half mast. No one seems to know the reason.

I phone the police and after running the numbers game, the lady says she will find out. After consultation, she says it's a national day of recognition of terrorism.

The Canadian flag must go back to its proper use: raised and lowered when a man or woman in uniform is killed in the line of duty. This includes any uniform worn in the service of the country.

I am not of the opinion that I can make a difference. The flag will probably be lowered the next time a politician's dog dies. God help us!
