America wants Trudeau

So, the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine is out and Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, is on the cover.

In case you’re not old enough to understand what that magazine is, firstly, I wonder why you’re reading my column, but secondly, it is probably one of the most widely-read publications from our friends to the south.

Apparently Americans want Trudeau to be their president instead of the guy who won the popular vote and all of the prerequisite electoral college votes too.

Lord knows I did not cast my ballot for the Liberal party in the last federal election and I daresay, not too many of you did either.

To be honest, aside from the town versus county drama that played itself out over the course of the now-opened Barrhead Regional Aquatics Centre and the fiasco that is a recreational agreement, the occasional discussion with Peace River – Westlock MP Arnold Viersen and of course, Barrhead-Westlock-Morinville MLA Glenn van Dijken, I actually pay more attention to American politics than Canadian, largely because I feel they impact our country and province more than our own do.

I know, it’s very un-Canadian of me.

However, I don’t think I’m alone in this.

But I digress.

A few months ago, our nation’s leader was on the cover of Vanity Fair and has been since lampooned as a selfie-seeker — I myself have referred to him as Mr. Selfie more than once in conversations with my colleagues.

At the time of the article, I felt like burying my face in my hands.

A prime minister is supposed to be different than the rest of us aren’t they?

That being said, it seems Democrats still sore over their spectacular electoral loss and even some Republicans, seem to be warming to the idea of what Trudeau represents.

Again, while most of us here in Alberta did not vote for the red team, it seems our prime minister is doing a lot of good for our image as a country on the world stage.

Sure, some of his agenda items — legalization of marijuana for one, are not the best ideas but look at the lengths he has gone to to make federal politics more palatable to the masses.

He is probably one of the more accessible prime ministers we’ve ever had.

In addition to his work with murdered and missing indigenous women, he’s also pushed for carbon reduction and made sure the federal cabinet has an even split of men and women.

I’ll agree with you that I think he should have spent a bit more time in the political arena before becoming our nation’s leader, but hey, if the Americans want him, I say go for it.

Just as long as they don’t give us Trump.
