Asking for help can be difficult. Some feel that asking for help is akin to admitting failure, and they try to solve their problems on their own, if at all.
But sometimes the best choice you can make is to ask for help when you need it.
Athabasca town council has taken its lumps of late, including here in this space. But they should be commended for setting their pride aside and asking for a municipal corporate review (MCR) to be done.
These reviews are not common, and acknowledging the need for one took guts on the part of council.
After cancelling an entire meeting because of disagreements over the agenda, it was clear the members of council were not on the same page anymore, and with well over a year left in their mandate, that’s a problem.
It would have been easy to try and sweep that incident under the rug, call it an aberration and insist everything is fine. That they have instead decided to pull back on the reins and get some outside help in getting back on track speaks to their commitment to serving this community as best they can.
Odds are you don’t agree with every decision town council makes, and that is your right. But locals can at least be assured they are represented by a council that is willing to admit they need a little help.
