The Barrhead Senior’s Drop-In Centre was full of gospel talent on Sunday, but more importantly it was packed with generosity, kindness and heart.

The centre was host to a fundraising gospel concert Oct. 27, a fundraiser for victims of the High River flooding this summer.

The project was headed by local music group Joyful Melody Trio, whose members Cari Blum, Colleen Durocher and Joyce Dietrich saw High River’s devastation firsthand.

The Trio joined gospel artist Ben Kellert, as well as gospel group Three &Company, which consisted of singers Dale and Diane Johnson, and Brent Anderson.

The concert was meant both as a thank-you to businesses and organizations who had already donated, as well as an opportunity for community members to contribute to the cause.

Often in times of crisis, those not directly effected aren’t quite sure how to help. With such a high number of people in need after the tragedy in High River, beginning to think of how to assist can become overwhelming.

Trio singer Blum hoped this concert would give people a chance to help.

The large groups was given some perspective on what happened in High River when the floor was opened up High River pastor Dean Kennedy. Through words of firsthand experience, as well as photos of the endless flood damage, the audience was shown a small part of what the High River community has been living with.

Between the talent-filled musical acts, the audience got to participate exciting auction sessions. A wide variety of donated items, many provided by local Barrhead businesses, were up for grabs. There was a little something for everyone: handmade quilts, baked goods, tasteful paintings, and much more.

The community didn’t hesitate to bid on the items, even if that meant purchasing a baked cake for $200. It was all for a good cause.

What’s even more admirable is the organizer’s ability to see Barrhead’s need as well. Not only will money be going to people in High River, some of the funds will remain local.

After checking with Barrhead FCSS about needs in the area, the Joyful Melody Trio decided to donate to the Barrhead Elementary School lunch program too. Though final numbers have not yet been added up, members of the Trio were all happy with the concert’s turnout.

Barrhead has always had a big heart, and here’s hoping this will never change.
