Dear Editor
In the Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011 issue of the Barrhead Leader, I read the comment written by Henry Stel, who quoted, “...more than 12,000 unborn children that are murdered in their mother’s wombs in Alberta every year...”! So I did some calculating to see how much it costs us Albertans to cover the above number of abortions. I went online and discovered that roughly $550 (early stages) to $1000 (later stages) covers the cost of an abortion. So, 12,000 x $800 (average) = $900,000. Over $1,000,000 (rising cost) roughly covers the cost of abortions per year! So where am I going with this? Well, quite frankly, I would much rather see the over $1 million be directed to hospitals in rural districts that so desperately need more funding towards better neonatal care. That is one idea and I am sure that there are many more good ways of spending over $1 million in the healthcare system. So what about the women that have rights over their bodies and want an abortion not because it endangers their life but only inconveniences their lifestyle? Well, they made the decision to have sex, they pay the piper. Quite frankly, I see it as a trend that we taxpayers have to keep picking up the costs of the thoughtless, reckless actions of others.
