April marks a drop-off in sports where games are concerned. The final rock has been cleared from the house; the last puck has been packed away.
But what April lacks in action at the multiplex, it makes up for in ways to support local athletes. Cheering on from the stands, while important, does not sustain cost- and labour-intensive sports associations.
The Athabasca District Minor Hockey Association is hosting its Hawkey Night fundraiser and an year-end meeting this week. Whether you have a yen to coach next year or would prefer to watch Clark Robertson impersonate the best of Coach’s Corner, this is the month to step up for amateur hockey.
The Rotary Club of Athabasca is also a hosting a fundraising dinner this month to support youth programs in town, including one that introduces kids to golf. Even if you’re not free for the April 25 event, if you’ve got some extra Aeroplan miles but no plans to use them, you can donate your miles to the cause.
It takes a community to raise a child — and to raise the funds to keep that child active and well rounded.
