There usually isn’t such a thing as a three-week break during volleyball season.
That is, if you are anybody but the teams at Boyle School.
Because of the small student population of Boyle and that they want to encourage their athletes to compete in various sports throughout the year, the senior volleyball teams take a break mid-season so several players are able to participate in cross-country running.
It has paid off in the past, with the school winning medals in cross-county, but were only able to place fifth at the provincial championship Oct. 18 in Okotoks.
That meant only practise for the volleyball clubs and while it did cause a bit of an upset for the senior girls in Lac La Biche Oct. 24 and 25, they seemed to rebound this past weekend as they played in their home tournament.
“The girls were certainly rusty in Lac La Biche following the break, but they did well,” explained Huyana Turner, head coach of the Huskies’ senior girls club and of their cross-country team.
“At home this weekend, we played really well beating Thorhild’s junior varsity team and then St. Mary’s from Westlock, though we lost Ecole Beausejour and a close one to Grassland.”
Even with their record in the round robin, they ended up facing Ecole Plamondon in the semifinal, but just weren’t able to pull out the win.
“We got back to where we wanted to be after that long layoff and we have vastly improved on a number of things, but we do need to keep working on a few items as we prepare for playdowns,” she added.
And that comes up quick, as they head to Spruce Grove tonight for zone playoff game against Living Waters Academy.
If they win they will earn a berth in the zone tournament this weekend in Thorhild.
