Candidates have less than two weeks remaining to pound the pavement on the campaign trail in hopes of winning over Barrhead-Morinville-Westlock constituents and convincing them to purchase a Progressive Conservative (PC) membership to cast a ballot on Jan. 28.

With five candidates having announced they will vie for the nomination, the race will be tight and a relatively small number of votes will probably make the difference.

Residents must realize that this individual could potentially become the area’s next MLA, should voters pick them in the spring provincial election — something they have been doing for the last several decades.

If this is the case, people should make every effort to get involved, even if it doesn’t align with their usual political affiliations.

Considering the history in the Barrhead-Morinville-Westlock riding and the fact that the next MLA is likely going to be PC, individuals should consider purchasing a PC membership. After all, just because you purchase a PC membership doesn’t mean you have to vote PC in the next provincial election.

Having a qualified individual represent the area on the provincial level is vital and it is paramount that individuals in the riding get involved to ensure the most qualified candidate is elected.

It should matter to every constituent what issues the candidate will spearhead as MLA, what decisions he or she will support and ultimately, how these choices reflect on the needs and desires of constituents.

When first announcing their intentions, several noted the main source of difficulty during the campaign would be reaching out to each community.

If they can’t make their way to each community, constituents instead can make their way to Memorial Hall on Thursday, Jan. 19 to participate in the candidate forum, which allows each of the five candidates an opportunity to speak.

If you want to have a say in the future of the constituency and the individual representing the area on the provincial level, purchase a PC membership, take part in the forum this week and then cast your vote on Jan. 28.
