Dear Sir, Last week Prime Minister Harper was the recipient of a prestigious award recognizing him as the World Statesman of the year.
Dear Sir,
Last week Prime Minister Harper was the recipient of a prestigious award recognizing him as the World Statesman of the year. I think we as Canadians can be proud that our Prime Minister is recognized on the world stage as a man who gives a lot of positive direction, especially in dealing with rogue nations.
In his acceptance speech Mr. Harper stated that, “When confronted with evil in the world, we (Canadians) take a stand, we take strong, principled positions in our dealings, whether popular or not.”
While I appreciate the position Mr. Harper has taken regarding many world issues, I question why he is not willing to take the same principled position regarding evil issues which take place in Canada.
A few days before we had the much awaited vote on Motion 312 put forward by MP Stephen Woodworth. The passing of this motion would have opened the way for a parliamentary debate on the question of when life begins, namely at conception, or at birth.
It’s actually not surprising that this motion was defeated in parliament. After-all, it is a known, scientific fact that life does begin at conception. The problem for those who do not want the abortion debate reopened is that acknowledging this would force a further discussion about the rights of the unborn. The only way to avoid that was to vote against Mr. Woodworth’s motion.
And so Canada continues with the unabated murder of thousands of the innocent and most vulnerable in our community, and this is being done in the name of human rights. It is true that human rights are important. But what about the human rights of those who are not yet born? Should their rights not be protected along with the rights of any other Canadian citizen? Do the rights of the mother really trump the rights of her unborn baby?
I applaud the efforts and intestinal fortitude of those members of parliament who put forward this motion, and who voted in favour of it. It must be very difficult for these men and women who, to the words of Mr. Harper, bravely, take a stand; take a strong, principled position in their dealings against the evils of this world, whether popular or not.
I only wish that Mr. Harper had shown the intestinal fortitude to follow their example. I hope that he, and the many others who don’t want to discuss this issue will realize that this issue simply cannot go away. It cannot go away because we as Canadians must take that all important principled position whether it is popular or not. The reality is that we must fight for the human rights of all Canadians. That includes the unborn, and the women and men who get hurt by abortion.
Please Mr. Harper, stand up for what you say is right, not only in world affairs, but also in domestic affairs. Follow the excellent examples given you by Stephen Woodworth, Rona Ambrose and the other eighty nine others. You’ll never regret doing the right thing. A society can only stand strong on the basis of righteousness and justice. Without those, our society will destroy itself.
H.A. Stel,
Barrhead
