Cheerfest a smash success

The entire community of Athabasca should feel proud for making the 2011 EPC Cheerfest a spectacular event.

Held on a snowy Saturday, the event could have been marred by the poor weather. But all the visiting teams braved the poor conditions and arrived safely at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex, and they didn’t come alone. An incredible 1,400 spectators crowded the facility for the event, making it the biggest Cheerfest yet.

Event organizer and cheer coach Barb Lachance received a well earned ovation for all her hard work in putting the event together and giving some of Alberta’s best young cheerleaders a stage on which to shine. Multiplex staff and event volunteers worked hard all day, welcoming all of the visitors to the community and making them feel at home. And cheer coaches, both local and visiting, deserve lots of credit for their countless hours of work and preparation.

But the real stars were the cheerleaders themselves, especially those on the five local teams. They wowed the crowd over and over again with their amazing performances, and demonstrated true sportsmanship by cheering on their competitors and welcoming them with open arms.

On Saturday, thanks to the efforts of some remarkable athletes and hard working volunteers, Athabasca played host to an event that won’t soon be forgotten.
