Community effort

It was my honour to be the organizing liaison for the two recent Team Alberta luncheons that were held at the Athabasca Legion on Aug. 6 and 11. But I didn't do it alone.

It was my honour to be the organizing liaison for the two recent Team Alberta luncheons that were held at the Athabasca Legion on Aug. 6 and 11. But I didn't do it alone. As was quoted on the radio, it was the first time in recent history that three of the larger community service groups participated in a joint endeavour. Special thanks go out to Darlene Reimer of the Athabasca Rotary Club and Mike Maclean of the Athabasca Lions Club; they were the point people for their groups and recruited many of the volunteers needed to stage these events. This was not an easy task given the time of year and vacation schedules.

A warm thank you goes out to the Legion members who also gave so generously of their time and energy. In total we had close to 30 volunteers who pitched in -hope you all enjoy the t-shirts.

A special thanks to Lauradelle Poirier and Karen Prosser; they were the brains and brawn behind the menu and had many dietary restrictions and allergies to contend with. They did an amazing job of pulling together the luncheons and, as commented on by athletes in last week's story in the Advocate, the guests were overjoyed at the freshness and variety of the selections offered.

Recognition also goes out to Comrade Jackie Jonk who stepped up at the last minute to run the kitchen on Aug. 11.

Last but certainly not least, thank you to the Town and County who generously donated money to help offset the costs of the food and provided trinkets for us to give to our guests. We were also fortunate to have several hundred trinkets donated by Athabasca University.

I can't help but think this small gesture of ours has helped fuel Team Alberta's performance. At last check, they were doing very well. Bring home the gold, athletes -we are all rooting for you.
