If you read enough children’s stories, you learn that monsters are strongest in the dark.
And few monsters in our world are scarier than cancer.
But two events held in this community last weekend shone the brightest of lights into the dark corner where cancer resides and made a big difference in the ongoing fight against the terrible disease.
On Friday night in Athabasca, the second annual Relay For Life served as an opportunity to remember those who have lost their lives and to honour those who remain. And it raised close to $50,000 dollars for the Canadian Cancer Society.
In Boyle on Saturday, the 10th annual Bryan Mudryk Golf Classic raised over $200,000 for Edmonton’s Cross Cancer Institute, where countless cancer patients, including the event’s namesake, have been given a new lease on life.
Both events are invaluable, and everyone who took part in them and helped to raise money and awareness should take a well deserved bow.
Our world moves so fast and our lives are so busy it can be difficult to look around us at the real and persistent problems that plague our fellow man. Both events last weekend offered the chance to take that much needed look around, and we’re all better for it.
