LETTERS: Council should stay out of plebiscite issue

To the Editor:

Who is Jon Kramer?

Oh sure, I know he was recently elected mayor of Westlock.

But what concerns me, and I believe that it should you, as Westlock constituents, is his questionable agenda and his duties in his mayoral position.

What right does Mr. Kramer have to tell me how I am supposed to vote on Feb. 22? Nowhere in the Municipal Government Act (MGA) can I find the right of any elected official who is eligible to tell me how I must vote.

Yet, in my mailbox, I find an expensive glossy circular of instruction to “stand for inclusion, vote no on February 22nd.”

Really? So, if I do not comply, I am being told that this community will not flourish, not feel safe, be unwelcoming, fail investment and development opportunities, lose a plethora of professionals and that “inclusion is the only way forward.”

Mr. Jon Kramer, mayor of Westlock, the only name on the circular, is instructing Westlock voters to vote “no” as he sees fit, or else. Why? To give Westlock voters this ultimatum is, in my opinion, out of bounds.

As a staunch proponent of democracy, I will always maintain our right “to vote as you wish, but please vote.”

The bottom line: Let the voters decide.

Robert Strand, Westlock
