Digging his new job

The Athabasca Advocate is a gemstone that I want to help polish, and know that we can make it shine brighter by shedding new light into further reaches of our community of readership.

The Athabasca Advocate is a gemstone that I want to help polish, and know that we can make it shine brighter by shedding new light into further reaches of our community of readership.

After reading it for over 20 years, I am glad to finally be part of an excellent publishing group and welcome myself to the team as reporter. The team here are all great to work with, and being involved in the community is one of the perks of the job. I’m looking forward to hearing stories from around the region helping research to bring more light to the news.

As a local who has studied the history of Athabasca, I know how important the Advocate is to the community and surrounding area, and I am glad to be a part of that. Without the newspaper, there would be no weekly tabloid serving the community and reporting on stories.  As we head into 2019, I look forward to finding new leads on new stories, and bringing some old relics to life as the history of Athabasca continues to unfold.

To me, starting with the Advocate is like a fresh start, ripe with possibilities and adventure, and I can think of no better way to start the new year than with a new job. I hope to bring this motif of new growth with me, and look forward to seeing the paper blossom as we officially move into the start of 2019.

This past Christmas marked the first year that I put up a real tree. I feel that my excitement for new growth must be contagious, because my Christmas tree surprised me on New Year’s Day by growing a bunch of spruce tips. I felt blessed by the new growth and that my tree was just as excited as I was to enter the new year with new tasks, duties, and responsibilities and in many ways added new meaning to my life.

As for who I am in that regular life, I enjoy working with plants, rocks, trees, chainsaws, and woodworking. Other things I enjoy to pass the time include metal detecting, playing video games, web publishing and working out.  Some of my favourite subjects are geology, psychology, computers, adventure sports and travel. I have a bachelor’s degree in English and Sociology, and master’s in Integrated Studies.
