Drinking and driving can ruin the holidays

The inevitable consequences of drinking and driving are tragic no matter when they occur. But there is something especially painful about them when they come at Christmas time.

The inevitable consequences of drinking and driving are tragic no matter when they occur.

But there is something especially painful about them when they come at Christmas time.

Most likely, it’s the stark contrast between a season of celebration and the horrible and utterly needless loss of life that is so often the result of drunk driving.

Oddly enough, it’s that very season of celebration that can be the unfortunate cause of drunk driving accidents; holiday parties are just starting to pop up, and there will be more of them as the calendar draws closer to Christmas and New Years.

There is certainly nothing wrong with celebrating the season. Unfortunately, as is the case with all celebrations, some will take it too far. Some will drink too much, try to drive home and ultimately hurt someone else, if not themselves.

The RCMP is cracking down on holiday drinking and driving, as they should. Those who drive while intoxicated must be made to understand that they are putting their own lives at risk, as well as the lives of innocent people who are also trying to enjoy the holiday season.

And for that, there is no excuse.
